2008 Durham Hunger CROP WALK

Approximately 3,500 participants took part in the 2007 Durham CROP WALK on an absolutely beautiful Spring afternoon. Aldersgate was well represented by a large number of Walkers who spent two hours hiking to raise money for the less fortunate in Durham and around the world. Our total for the 2007 effort was $6,500. Below are photos taken during the 2002 CROP WALK.

What is CROP WALK?
CROP WALK is an annual event which combines fun and fundraising to raise money for hungry people throughout the world. Walkers invite friends to sponsor them with a contribution.

Who walks?
Anyone who wants to make a difference in the lives of hungry people. Walkers come from Durham’s religious community, schools, businesses and nonprofit agencies.

When?
The 2008 Walk will take place on Sunday, March 16, at 2:30 p.m.

Where?
The Durham CROP WALK will begin at the Chapel on Duke’s West Campus, proceed to East Campus, through the Walltown neighborhood north of the campus, and return to West Campus, ending at the Circle – a distance of about eight kilometers (4.8 miles).

Why walk?
Hungry people in developing countries typically walk as much as 10 kilometers each day to get food, water, and fuel, and to take their goods to market. We walk to identify with their struggle for existence. CROP WALK provides us an opportunity to “WALK with the World.”

Who sponsors the walk?
CROP WALK is sponsored nationally by Church World Service (CWS), one of the most effective and efficient relief services in the world. Locally it is sponsored by Durham Congregations in Action (DCIA), representing a broad spectrum of Durham’s religious communities.

How is the money spent?
75%
is distributed by CWS, which since 1946 has carried out global hunger education and provided money for refugees, disaster relief and self-help projects in more than 80 countries. 25% of the money stays here in Durham and is distributed by DCIA to local hunger-related agencies. Contributions to the 2006 Durham CROP WALK, second largest of the 2,000 Walks held annually in the United States, totaled $200,000.

What are the goals for the 34th Durham CROP WALK?

  • To have 4,000 walkers.
  • To raise $200,000
