AUMC Discipline Policy for Christian Education

We, the congregation of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, cherish our covenant with children as affirmed in our Baptismal vow. "With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround the children with a community of love and forgiveness that they may grow in service to others. We will pray for them, that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life."  As Methodists we accept our Christian responsibility to "do all in our power to increase our children's faith, confirm their hope, and perfect them in love" - Baptismal Covenant II, The United Methodist Hymnal

 We want to create an environment where all children feel valued and welcome.  Jesus said, "Let the children come to me and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs." (Matthew 19:14)  We create a positive, learning experience in our Christian education ministry when all children, youth, parents, and teachers know what is expected of them.  

These are our shared expectations: 

"I Can” Statements for children and youth in Christian education

  • I can follow the Golden Rule and treat others as I want to be treated.

  • I can be respectful to myself, my parents, my teachers, my classmates, and to God’s house.

  • I can speak appropriately and positively while in God’s house.

  • I can be proud of my actions and openly share them with my parents.

 Consequences Used to Correct Behavior during Christian Education

  1. Warning

  2. Age appropriate time out

  3. Conversation with teacher and child

  4. Contact parent

  5. Conference with parent (and invite the child if appropriate)

“We Believe” Statements for Parents and Teachers

  • Parents and teachers show God's love to the children in their care.

  • Parent and teachers will work together to address children’s behavior.

  • Parents and teachers will be supportive of each other through prayer and positive actions.

  • Parents and teachers will pray for guidance in teaching the children in our care.
