Sunday School at Aldersgate

If YOU miss Sunday School, YOU miss out!

The Outbackers Class  -  Family Life Center Room 209

The Outbackers is an intergenerational class including singles and couples.  Issues facing Christians in the everyday world are springboards for class topics.  Lively discussions are generated by thought provoking questions based on biblical topics.  Come join the Outbackers for Sunday School as we study The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. This book is a blueprint for Christian living in the 21st century - a lifestyle based on God's eternal purposes, not cultural values. Using over 1,200 scriptural quotes and references, it challenges the conventional definitions of worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and evangelism.  While participation in our discussions is encouraged, no one is ever put on the spot!  This friendly, outgoing group constantly strives to discover ways to share their love of the Lord with each other and those that they meet in their everyday lives.

The Serendipity Class  -  Family Life Center Room 207

The Serendipity Class is a discussion-based class in which its members explore biblical passages in an open, safe and caring atmosphere.  The goal of the class is to allow its participants the opportunity to examine and reflect on their faith, increase their knowledge of the bible and to become stronger Christians.  This is accomplished through active discussions of various topics that deal with traditional Biblical subjects, current events, contemporary social issues, and personal life styles questions.  The Serendipity Class
will begin a study in January of Reynolds Price's newest book, A Serious Way Of Wondering. In this book, Price turns his attention to the ethics of Jesus. He confronts the ethical questions that modern society faces daily but that Jesus never addresses. Thus, in three brilliant and moving apocryphal gospel stories, Price's Jesus engages in conversations with homosexuality, suicide and the plight of women in male-dominated societies. Price's provocative parables provide no simple answers to the simple question "What would Jesus do?" Rather, they compel us to imagine creatively our engagements with Jesus' teachings and the impact of those teachings on our lives. Come join us for this challenging study.

The Homebuilders Class  -  Family Life Center Room 206

The Homebuilders Class was formed expressly to discuss issues about parenting young children and encouraging the spiritual growth of children. The class addresses issues such as how to form Godly character in your children, teach your children to know God, to pray and how to parent with disciple and love. At the same time, the members of the Homebuilders Class are committed to nurturing their own spiritual lives as adults. Thus, the class alternates parenting studies with more general Bible studies that encourage their adult discipleship and growth in the Christian faith. The class is studying A Gentle Thunder by Max Lucado. It is a study highlighting God's pursuit of us and how far He will go to get our attention. We hope that you can join us for some lively discussion.

  Young Adults ( 19 - 35 )  -  no room required

The Aldersgate Young Adults are not your 'normal' Sunday School class. They do not meet on Sunday morning, but rather gather for activities and events through out the month. The Young Adults class is for single or married young people between the ages of 19 and 35 who are looking to be a part of a group that wants to have a good fellowship time, discuss controversial issues, help the community and serve the church. The class does at least one social activity and at least one community/church-based outreach once a month. Come and join us in a fun-filled way to serve the Lord!

The Glass Class  -  Family Life Center Room 210

The International Lesson Series, Adult Bible Studies  -
This quarterly study presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life. The Glass Class invites all persons who are older in years but still young in heart to be a part of their weekly study and fellowship. The class is a caring fellowship of “young at heart” believers who use The International Sunday School Lessons for application for daily Christian living.  The name Glass Class may lead one to believe that the class membership is fragile.  This couldn’t be farther from the truth.  This dedicated class has learned the lessons of life and faces each day with a strong commitment and faith.  The class reflects the love and respect of the then retired founding minister of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in 1956, Dr. J. Glass.

Middle Grades  -  Family Life Center Room 202

The intent of the middle grades program is to engage the young people in discussions that encourage them to think about their beliefs. Students are encouraged to discuss their views and to develop and defend alternative interpretations of Bible passages. The class uses a defined curriculum as a basis for each week's lesson. This is built around a specific portion of the Bible, frequently from the New Testament. Students are encouraged to continue their study of the Bible outside the class and to carry over the teachings into their daily life.

High School  -  Family Life Center Room 201

Senior High Sunday School addresses the needs and concerns of the students in the 9th - 12th grades. Using faith to help us through our daily life and in our personal relationships is stressed. Our obligations to Christ are investigated and discussed. Using Biblical references, seniors are encouraged to communicate and problem-solve. The curriculum varies.
