Aldersgate United Methodist Church Sanctuary

USHER GUIDELINES

Procedure for depositing the money from Sunday morning offerings:

  1. Each service will have a 6" x 9" envelope for their use.

  2. After the Worship service ends, two ushers will be responsible for taking everything out of the offering plates and putting it into their envelope.

  3. If the offering is too large to fit into one envelope, use additional envelopes.

  4. Seal envelope once everything is placed in it.

  5. Label envelope with Date, Worship Service & Signature of both ushers.

  6. The two ushers will take the envelope(s) and deposit in the safe opening outside the Finance Room.

8:15 A.M.

Ushers should be in position by 8:00 A.M. to assist Worship service attendees. Pick up the bulletins (adults and 2 childrenís) from the office along with the envelopes for the offerings and take them to the sanctuary.  Check Sanctuary for cleanliness and order. Verify that red attendance books are located at ends of each pew (2 books per pew). After service has ended, perform general housekeeping (pick up discarded papers, return hymnals to pew holders, etc.). Collect the offerings from the plates and place in one of the envelopes. Take the envelope to the Finance Room (last door on the right down the staff hallway) and deposit in the safe opening outside the Finance Room.  Any offering left at the Communion rail on the 1st Sunday is to be collected in a separate envelope and labeled "Pastorís Discretionary Fund". This envelope is also placed in the offering envelope.

9:30 A.M.

The bulletins for this service are different from the 8:15 and 11:00 A.M. services. After the service ends, perform general housekeeping (pick up discarded papers, return hymnals to pew holders, etc.). Place the offering into an envelope and deposit in the safe opening outside the Finance Room.

11:00 A.M.

Ushers should be in position by 10:40 A.M. to assist Worship service attendees. In the event the 9:30 A.M. service is running long, please assist in maintaining quiet in the Narthex area.  At the end of the service all of the attendance books should be collected and taken to the office (check carefully because they are often placed in the hymnal racks).

Usherís Ministry

  • Our ushers are one of the first to greet all who have come to worship at Aldersgate.  It is important that they welcome and assist all persons who enter the Sanctuary.

  • The ushers should be at their stations twenty minutes before the worship service is scheduled to start.  Before the service altar candlewicks should be checked for easy lighting as well as the acolyte lighter wick. Verify that a lighter is functioning and available.

  • Distribute the bulletins as you greet the people.

  • When the sanctuary is crowded, the ushers need to find every available seat and then usher worshipers to that seat or seats.  Anticipate the need for extra chairs.

  • There are two "Welcome" signs in the narthex. After the Announcements are completed, turn both signs over to display "Quiet Please". After the Hymn of Invitation, turn both signs back to the "Welcome" display.

  • The ushers count the attendance after the first hymn.  Be sure to count all in attendance in the sanctuary including the choir, ministers and others up front (like the Brass).  Count the children in both nurseries and Kids Own Worship (11:00 service). Record the attendance on the form found on the bulletin board outside the office.

  • The ushers assist with the receiving of Godís Tithes and Offerings. Walk down the aisle 2x2 and at the front separate to the right and left so the last 2 step up with the others.

  • The ushers assist with Holy Communion on the 1st Sunday of each month.  Remember that we attempt to have 22-24 persons at the Communion rail for each table.  This works out to 11-12 persons from each side to be directed by the usher to each table.

  • The usher must find a substitute if he or she cannot be at Church on a given Sunday.

  • Ushers should always wear their nametags; this allows everyone to know the usher by name.  Ushers should dress appropriate for the Worship service.

  • The ushers are very important to the Worship service.  Through welcoming, greeting, and seating attendees, the usher helps to assure that the Worship service will be meaningful to all who worship Christ at Aldersgate. Remember to treat everyone in the manner that you would like to be treated and your ministry will touch many lives.
