R Wave Respite is an outreach ministry of Aldersgate United Methodist Church (AUMC) servicing both it’s congregation and the community at large. The purpose is to offer respite care to care partners of mild to moderate dementia afflicted individuals. The respite allows the care partner to meet appointments, have lunch with friends, shop, or just take a much needed nap. Respite also allows the ‘friend’ a break from the care partner. The model is completely dependent on volunteers. It is also a respite for the volunteer. Volunteers find purpose, adds a break from everyday life, is a social engagement, sense of satisfaction, and just plain ole’ fun!! R Wave Respite is based off the model that was championed by First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, AL in 2012 by Bishop Lawson Bryan and Daphne Johnston. As of this writing, RFA has 64 locations in about 19 states. There are 4 in North Carolina, with R Wave being the fifth.
