opening Prayer
Light a candle to remind us of God’s presence and enter into a minute of silence before praying.
God of Resurrection, the light of your love sees into the hearts of us all.
In you there is no darkness at all and no secrets are hidden.
Cast out any shadow within us by your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly live and love as we follow the light of the resurrected Jesus Christ.
In response to your grace we magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Weekly Scripture and Reflection Questions
- Jesus entered a room of fear with words of peace; where in your life today are you most in need of experiencing that resurrecting peace?
- Thomas the Twin said, “Unless I touch and see the nail marks, I will not believe.” When have you related to God like this?
- What has helped you move into deeper faith — and how have you been a support to others who want to touch and see?
- Reflecting on the walk to Emmaus, can you identify a time when Jesus was walking with you on a difficult path, but your eyes were only opened to His presence in hindsight?
- What practices — worship, prayer, communion, service, small group community — help open your eyes to see Christ present in your daily life?
- What is the significance for your life that the resurrected Jesus has wounds to share and continues to participate in ordinary acts of life like eating?
- Where might Christ be inviting you to "touch and see" — to experience resurrection in a tangible way this week?
Weekly Scripture and Reflection Questions
- Jesus calls the disciples to be witnesses of repentance and forgiveness. Where is God calling you to practice forgiveness or reconciliation?
- Jesus calls his followers to be "witnesses" of resurrection. What would others say your life witnesses to?
- The early church was devoted to an "alternative community" of belonging, prayer and radical sharing. In your own life how have you witnessed the church practicing being this alternative community?
- What is one change you could implement in your life that would be a step toward living into this alternative way of being?
- We often wait for a "perfect time" to act on our faith; What might God be calling you to stop waiting for, and to start moving toward?
- Jesus promised power to be witnesses "to the ends of the earth." If the Holy Spirit came upon you in power where or to whom do you think God would send you?
- What would it look like to be "filled" by the Spirit in a way that gives you courage to act or speak in ways you normally wouldn't?
- What boundaries — of comfort, familiarity, or assumption — might the Spirit be inviting you to cross?
Wrap Up and reflection
Sharing and Praying:
Spend time praying for others by giving thanks to God for things to celebrate and lifting up needs, worries, hurts, and concerns.
Wrap Up:
Reflect back over this prayer and reflection time using any or all of the questions below:
- What is a word or phrase that captures something that stood out from this time of prayer and reflection?
- What is your “take away” from this time of prayer and scripture reflection
- What is God saying to you right now? What are you going to do in response to what God is saying?
- What does it mean to you today to live in light of resurrection?
Closing Prayer:
Gracious God we thank you for the empty tomb and the light of resurrection that lights our path. May the peace of resurrection settle into our bones that we may live without fear, see with new eyes, and love beyond borders. By the power of your Holy Spirit guide us to be witnesses to Christ as we become this radical community of belonging, sharing, forgiveness, mercy and love. Amen.
